But if you can’t wait a few more months, or don’t even plan on upgrading, you can get some of the new features today. OS X Mavericks looks like it will be a fantastic upgrade. And tagging is available for free with an app called Tagit. If you don’t want to replace Finder completely you can try a plug-in called TotalFinder, which adds tabs and few more features. It’s not cheap at $40 but has a lot more than just tabbed windows. You can replace the Finder with a different app called Path Finder 6. You have a couple of options if you want a tabbed Finder now. And Finder can now run in full-screen mode. You can simply drag and drop files from one tab to another. The Finder will soon feature tabs, meaning you’ll no longer need to have multiple Finder windows open. You customize which apps it interacts with, and push notifications to your iOS device with Prowl. It’s a popular notification utility that lets you customize how it looks and when it displays. Managing your notifications has been around for a long time with Growl. You can get updates from your favorite website even when Safari isn’t running, and get a summary of the notifications you missed if you were away. Meaning you can reply to messages, delete emails, and interact with other apps. Unfortunately, neither will let you run full-screen apps side-by-side. Or if you want a full-featured monitor management app you can try Multimon, which will also give you multiple menu bars. You can use a free app called Secondbar to display another menu bar on your extra displays. You’ll be able to run apps at full-screen at the same time, or on one monitor and show the desktop on another. Each display will have its own menu bar, and the Dock is available any monitor. There won’t be a primary and secondary monitor anymore. You’ll have more control and flexibility when using multiple displays with OS X Mavericks. Other popular choices include 1Password and LastPass. Password managers have been around for a while, my favorite being Dashlane. There is also a password generator and works with credit card information as well. This new feature will save your passwords and log you into your online accounts automatically and will sync your passwords across multiple devices. iCloud KeychainĪpple is bringing their own password manager to 10.9 with the iCloud Keychain. While you’ll need to wait for the new calendar features, you can get rid of the leather look now with the free utility Mountain Tweaks. It has been updated with a sleek new design and some extra features such as continuous scrolling. Gone is the current version’s ugly leather appearance which always felt so out of place. The calendar app has received a massive design overhaul. You can do this now by using Google Maps with myPhoneDesktop and the Chrome extension. Of course, Google Maps have been around for a long time, but the main feature of Apple Maps is being able to send an address to your iOS device for navigation. MapsĪpple Maps have made their way to the desktop. All your bookmarks highlighted passages, and last pages read will also sync across devices. Amazon has Kindle apps for OS X, iOS devices, as well as Android and Window platforms. If you use a Kindle you’ve had these features for a long time.
